Kitchen Aprons

When it comes to the protective bib people wear over their clothing when they are doing work that may become messy, the kitchen aprons worn by the general population are the most popular. We will try to clarify that statement a little.

Kitchen Apron

Your average person, that does not do a job that requires them to wear some form of apron, will be more likely to own kitchen aprons than any other garments in this category. You may be unaware that this category of garments has more than one type, and more than one purpose.

People who work in meat packing houses, as butchers, and as the people who wrap the meat, wear these items to protect their clothing. Some of these items will be made of a plastic material so that the blood they are exposed to does not seep through their garment and onto their clothing. In your local meat stores you will see your butcher wearing these items. The local butchers generally wear a garment that is white and covers the majority of the front of their clothing.

When you go to have an x-ray on your teeth, the technician will drape a garment of this nature over your body. This is a lead lined apron, and it will not even remotely remind you of kitchen aprons, but none the less, the garment will serve the purpose of protecting a portion of your body from exposure to radioactive rays.

When you see a carpenter with a cloth tied around their waist, you are more than likely looking at a nail apron. These items usually have two pockets, and are designed to carry the nails, or screws the carpenter needs while they are performing their job. The nicer versions that you see a carpenter wearing that is made from leather and has several pockets are tool belts not nail aprons. These are very practical items that help the person be able to carry what they need.

Of course when you go out to eat the person that waits on you will be wearing one of these garments. Their versions will be not dissimilar to the carpenter’s version. They are generally made with at least two pockets on the front so that the person can carry items they need to perform their duties. The wait staff will usually keep their order pad and their pen in the front pocket of the garment so it is handy. They will sometimes place items like straws in the front of the garment so that they always have them handy as well. You will also see them use these pockets to place their tips into.

Kitchen aprons are not that different from all the other types, they are just usually worn by a non-professional. Kitchen aprons can have pockets, or be pocket less. They can cover the entire front of your body, or they can tie around your waist to cover the lower portion. They all serve the same general purpose, to cover your clothing, and protect you from splatters or spills when the work gets messy.
